Catching the Wave – Rediscovering The VOICE

I recently had a dream where I was to speak at a graduation ceremony. As I sat there waiting my turn, I opened my Bible to the text I had prepared but the page was blank, nothing! I ran to the bathroom in a panic to pray and I heard God say, “Give them a graduation gift.” I replied in bewilderment, “I don’t have anything to give them,” He said, “give them the gift of prayer.”

It was about 4:30 am when I awoke from the dream and laid there pondering it’s meaning. I sensed the Spirit say “I want you to preach on prayer at the Christian Revival Church (CRC) in Africa.” As I battled back and forth in my mind if this was God speaking or something I ate the night before, I finally surrendered the passage that I had prepared to preach from John 14, which was blank in the dream, to the topic on prayer. As I did that God gave me an outline in just a few minutes that I could ponder for the next several hours on the plane.

That Sunday at the CRC church the Holy Spirit worked in a mighty way as the passage from Luke 11:1-13 highlighted graduating to a new level in your relationship to God through prayer founded on the Father’s love, the Filling of the Holy Spirit, and Forgiveness. I watched as many came forward for prayer that morning and was overwhelmed by the living Voice of God that can change our plans and make His Word come alive again.

The study of Scripture as well as the history of the church reveal that, whenever a new wave of the Holy Spirit breaks forth God’s voice is heard again and His Word becomes alive with power to revive and transform. Just pick up your Bible and read the story of Samuel hearing the voice of God for the first time in the tabernacle after years of famine of hearing the Word, and how the people of Israel were transformed by it. Or read the story of the young King Josiah rediscovering the Word of God and the revival that broke forth because of it (2 Kings 22-23).

During our Stepping into the River conference and vision trip in Lesotho, God continued to speak in amazing ways. One night it rained so hard that a river ran through the Beautiful Gate campus and surrounded the River Chapel where our conference began. We all watched in awe as we sensed God affirming His Word through creation in an amazing and tangible way.

At the end of our time together in Africa, Ray and Sue Haakonsen–the founders of Beautiful Gate–prayed a blessing over the team. The Spirit spoke through them in a wonderful way as each person in the room received a word from the Lord. This was a Holy moment that will definitely have a lasting impact on all who were present.

From the dream, changed message, the rain, the river, the prophetic words spoken in Africa and so much more, I sense God’s voice to be speaking and His Word coming alive by the power of the Holy Spirit. This gives me great joy! A new wave is about to break forth! A wave that will revive and transform! A wave that will help us to live as radical followers of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Keep listening for it!!!!`

Catching the Wave – Repentance

There was a reason it was called “old man’s beach” I thought to myself as I paddled out to get in position to catch a wave. I was exhausted as wave after wave knocked me off my board. When I finally reached the intended destination, I was way too fatigued to even attempt catching any sort of wave. It took all my strength to hang on to to the board and stay afloat, I felt old and out of “surf shape.”`

Spiritually speaking do you ever feel exhausted? Out of shape? Weary from swimming against the current? Perhaps God is calling you to refine and refocus your attention back to our Father God. It is so easy to become overwhelmed by the chaos of our lives, the future of the church, and crisis’ of our country. How easily our souls become spiritually out of shape and gradually secularized by the seduction of the world around us. In order to “catch the next wave” repenting in prayer and asking for our Father to respond with His Holy Spirit is essential.

There is an old phrase that says the world was made for the body, the body made for the soul, and the soul was made for God. Satan continues to reverse that order. He attempts to push our souls farther and farther away from God enticing us to bring glory to ourselves and focus so much of our time on the idols of this world. And where it has gotten us? As we have taken God out of our homes, churches, schools, business, arts, government, etc. our souls have become empty. And when the soul is empty the enemy will seek to fill it with all kinds of evil.

An empty, weary, soul can only be restored by Repentance. The word means to turn away from the world and turn back to the Father’s love. Romans 2:4 says:

…His kindness leads to repentance..

It is the love and kindness of the Spirit of God, which refines us, refocuses us, and then restores our souls through repentance. You and I live in a secular culture that has pushed Christ out of every sphere of life and has ravished our souls. However I believe the Spirit is seeking to awaken our souls to turn back to the lover of our souls via repentance.

Sometimes it is a constant struggle with self and the world and I find when I focus on either of these I allow my soul to be barely hanging on and exhausted from paddling on my own. Yet, when I refocus and repent I gain strength from the most important relationship-the relationship with the Jesus, the lover of my soul. Often it is a daily necessity to cry out and ask for the resurrecting power of Jesus Christ to help me return to the Father’s love.

Is there a specific area in your life that is consumed by the world and left your soul feeling desperate? Cry out to Christ Jesus and His powerful work on the cross to forgive you and release you from whatever strongholds of this world are captivating you. May you return to the Father’s arms of love and hold on to this promise:

“Return to me and I will return to you,” says the LORD Almighty!

Malachi 3:7

Catching the Next Wave – Refocus

There is an art to catching just the right wave. That day on the pier watching my friend’s son catch wave after wave it was obvious he knew the right wave and when to paddle for it. His eyes studied the on coming wave and experience taught him this is the one. It was a matter of focus.

I sense the Spirit is preparing God’s children for the next spiritual wave by calling out loudly for us to Refocus! I know many who are continuing to experience a season of Refinement. Being tossed to and fro by the waves of adversity has a way of causing us to realign and refocus on what is foundational to life.

Last week two spiritual heroes of mine passed away-Billy Graham and Rick Gallagher. Much media coverage was given with the death of 99 year-old Billy Graham; I heard one interview where Rev. Graham was asked if he could do anything over again what would he change in his life? His response, “pray more travel less!” With those powerful words I hear a challenge to refocus my life on making prayer and the presence of God priority.

Over the last 10 years there is probably no one other than my wife who I have logged more prayer time with and have been prayed for by than my dear friend Rick. Even a few days before He saw Jesus face to face he called and while fighting for each and every breath faithfully brought my family, Oceans, and myself before the throne room of grace. I can’t tell you how I will miss these calls.

These two spiritual wave riders knew that to focus one’s life around prayer is the greatest fruit of living in a loving trust relationship with our Savior. My friend Rick’s physical body had been breaking down for a number of years. Yet through this struggle Abba Father refined and refocused his life. As his body failed his spirit became strong and through his prayer life he enabled many of us to catch one more spiritual wave. This love relationship realized in intimate communion with our Heavenly Father is not just available to Rick, but to each of us.

I hear the Spirit of Jesus calling His people to refocus and accept the absolute trust relationship that is anchored in prayer. Sincere, heartfelt prayer demonstrates a total dependence on God. Jesus clearly stated the # 1 commandment was:

Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence (Matthew 23:37, MSG).

You and I can refocus and live in a passionate love relationship with our Father through prayer. We can saturate our souls by hiding His Word in our hearts. And YES, we will be prepared to catch the next wave of His Spirit.

Where is your focus today? What is consuming your attention? Do you hear the Spirit of Christ saying turn your focus back to a love relationship with your Father God. You can experience intimate communion with Him!

Catching the Next Wave – Refined

It was a picture perfect day on the central coast in California. I was with some friends standing on a pier basking in the sunshine and watching their son master some good size waves. With ease he maneuvered into position and eyed each on coming wave knowing the right ride as well as when to paddle to harness its hurling force. He made it look easy but knowing from my puny past attempts there is an art to this exhilarating adventure that takes experience.

Recently in my spirit I sense God is preparing to send another move of His Spirit. Waves of His presence, that will demonstrate His glory and prepare His church for a new gospel season where a mighty harvest will take place around the world.

I affirm that God’s Spirit is Sovereign and yet as His children we still have a responsibility to position ourselves to catch the wave of grace just as they did in the book of Acts. For the next few weeks I want to focus on a few themes that prepare our hearts to catch the next move of God.

One of the reasons I sense a new wave is beginning to swell is because of what many in the body of Christ have been facing of late. Just last week two men shared with me about their season of “the dark night of the soul.” Where God seems distant and darkness seems to be their closet friend. Others have shared physical battles, marriage crisis, tragic deaths, and loss of jobs, major transitions, and intense spiritual battles in ministries.

From Scripture as well as history when a new wave is about to break forth there is a season of refining that seems to break over the people of God like pounding painful waves leaving you powerless. Our Father uses these test and trials to strip away self in order to make more room for the Spirit of Christ’s love to reign in our hearts. Paul affirms this refining work from our Father when he tells us to:

Rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character, and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit… (Rom. 5:3-5).

If you are going through a season of refining take heart and have hope that your Good Father is positioning you for a new wave of His Spirit and the harvest that will follow. Peter said as well to a people suffering:

These have come so that your faith of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire – may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen Him, you love Him…and believe in Him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy… (I Peter 1:7-8).

Keep waiting with arms stretched high taking ahold of the hope of Heaven’s love- that the wave is on the way!

This is Ahav!

Where is the fist place the word “love” is used in the Bible? No cheating by looking below, so what do you think? I asked this question to a group of men this past weekend in the county jail and the answers ranged from, the first two chapters of Genesis all the way to the Gospels.

Genesis 22:2 is the correct answer! This is where God comes to Abraham and says:

Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.

The Hebrew word used is Ahav, which is a love that is willing to do more for another person than oneself. This is a sacrificial type of love that is given to a spouse, child, a friend, and to God.

Abraham loved his “only” boy. He was the son of promise, his miracle, his future, and his pride and joy. He would do anything for him. And yet Father God asks Abraham-as a test of his Ahav-to lay down his “only” beloved son as an act of worship.

In this powerful love story Abraham willing gives Isaac back to God on the altar, thankfully God intervenes and provides a ram in Isaac’s place. This act by Abraham demonstrated Ahav, he completely trusted in the Father and this response of worship overwhelmed the Father’s heart.

This potent love passage is a paradigm that displays the perfect love of God the Father has given to His children.

Father Abraham placed the wood for the sacrifice on his son’s shoulders – Father God placed the wooden cross on the shoulders of His Son for the sacrifice. The son carries the wood up the mountain – The Son carries the wood up the same mountain. The father binds his son to the altar – The Heavenly Father binds His Son to the Cross. The father lifts up the knife of sacrifice but is stopped – The judgment of the Father is lifted upon the Son but is not stopped. The Father’s only Son is sacrificed in our place for our sins. This is Ahav – This is love! (John 3:16)

A man in his early 20’s sat to my left in the sterile jail room as I shared the Ahav of the Father. His eyes filled with tears whispered, “I need that love!” My response, “so do I!” No jail, prison, or darkest moment can stop the Ahav of the Father from setting you free.

Tomorrow is Valentines Day, RECEIVE The Father’s act of Love for you and RELEASE back to Him your life as Sacrifice of Loving Worship! This is Ahav!

As we enter into the season of Lent I would like to invite you to follow Oceans on Instagram @oceansministries to get daily prayer meditations from Climbing Prayer Mountain starting this Wednesday.
